Thanks

Are you planning on taking the bike to the track? Depending on the use there are a lot of different choices in the Pirelli line
Diablo Supercosa is the current Race tire
Supercorsa Pro is the previous race tire now marketed as a track day tire
Diablo Corsa III is a street/track tire
Diablo Corsa is a street tire
Diablo Rosso Less aggressive street tire than Diablo

I will be using it mostly on the track at njmp. I would like to get a track season out of them. I ride in the intermediate group on a 748S

I'd go with the Diablo Corsa III based on grip and longevity.

:agree: with Dave. I don't really know much about the Rosso.I,ve been running the SC Pros and Race Diablos this year in A group and they hook up great for me.

I've been very happy with the Diablo Corsa IIIs on the track, and you can't beat NESBA's price on a set...contact Moon. I get about 6-8 days out of them.

I'm right with HondaGal. I run mid to bottom "I" and love the DCIII. I am going to run a SC front this year with a DCIII for a little more front-end grip. I've seen a bunch of guys do it and in all groups B-CR.

I've heard of lots of folks doing that, too. Yeah, Poper, which Supercorsa? The pro, or the current race tire? I'd be interested in trying that, since I wear the rear out way before the front!

I'm not Poper, but I started running the Pro front and DCIII rear towards the end of the season. (Judy, I think I had a pro rear on at NJMP because I wanted to use it up before the end of the season.) The ONLY reason I am doing this is because I had issues with the prior gen Diablo Corsa, and it's stuck in my head. Other people have no issues with the current DCIII front tire.
FWIW,

Thanks Steve! And Poper! So it's a Supercorsa Pro front, then? Is the SC1 an older generation? Does the Pro come in different levels of "softness"? Steve, I remember you talking about the Pro front now. Maybe I'll give it a try, but I'm not fast enough to worry about the Corsa III on the front, it's been fine!
Well, back to MotoGP on the Playstation! :) Winter's too long already!!

Looks like I'm one of the few people who has used a set of the Diablo Rossos at the track this past year.
I'd been using DCIII's front and rear on my 07 R1 for a couple of years. I run in the top third of the I group and get about 8 track days out of a DCIII front and I'm lucky to get 5 days on the DCIII rear (I have burned up DC3 rears in as little as three days). I checked out a set of Rossos mid season to see if I could get better wear without giving up too much grip.
The Rossos were very predictable, the grip level was pretty good, the turn in felt a little better to me and my lap times were very similar. I don't have anything bad to say about them. I kind of liked the Rosso front better than the DCIII front but I haven't tried mixing fronts and rears. The Rosso rear lasted for 6 track days and it still had plenty of street wear left in it so I rode out to the Indy MotoGP on the Rossos. Had to ride in some rain on the way back from Indy and the tires were good in the rain. So I'd say they're a pretty good track/street tire.
I switched to using my R6 at the track in September and left the Rossos on the R1. If you're not buying your tires at the track the Rossos are less expensive but it's really hard to beat the pricing on DCIII's bought at the track.
Hope that helps...... Good luck......I suspect you'd be fine either way.

Hey Smithereens:
Thanks for the write up on the Rosso's. I run a 120 DCIII on the front and a 170 Diablo on the rear. I did this combo on Chris Moon's advice and have been very happy.
When I saw the Diablo being replaced by the Rosso I searched frantically for a good write up on the Rosso. They've been hard to find, so thanks again.

Hey BZ
Just wrote a reply that disappeared when I hit send..... hate when that happens....second try.....
The Rosso was recommended to me by a Pirelli technician who explained to me that the Rosso profile is more like a "race tire" profile which improves turn in and has a better contact patch at extreme lean angles. I couldn't find any good tire tests either ....but what the technician said made sense so I tried a set and I'm glad I did. I suspect the tire hasn't gotten much play because it's new and people tend to stay with something they know..... and the DC3 is very well known at this point.
I've got three days at JenningsGP in January which will finish off the DC3 I have on the R6 and I'm probably going to try a set of Rossos on the R6 now that I've discovered that even with 50 hp less the R6 can scorch a rear DC3 as fast as the R1.....probably because I can be more aggressive on the throttle with the R6. I'll let you know what I find out in the Spring.
Later,
Kris
I'm sure the SV riders are already aware, but the Rosso also comes in a 160 rear that the DCIII doesn't, and are MUCH cheaper than the supercorsas.
I've not had a chance to run a rosso, but I really considered it in place of new pilot powers. From what I could gather about the Rosso online, they did try to make it a bit more aggressive at full lean. it's got no tread at the edge of the tire, which is actually why i ended up going with the PP rear... If it does rain, the Rosso is almost as bad as a supercorsa, but with no additional grip in the dry.
i really just wish they would make the DCIII in a 160/60

Moon mentioned to me that SV riders use the Rossos because of the DC3 size issue. I'll bet a rear would last a long time on an SV.
Regarding the Rossos in the wet......since I only ride on dry tracks ..... the lean angle to get the part of the tire that has no tread wouldn't come into play on the street.

I'm beginning to suffer paralysis by analysis with regard to tires. I'm currently running PP's on my R6. I'm happy performance for the most part, but don't like the way the leading and trailing edges of the grooves wear differently at the edges of the tire. I can't say that I feel a problem, but my brain tells me that the uneven wear is a symptom of poor performance. This leads me to a lack of confidence in the tire. I had been considering Supercorsa Pro's but doubt I'll be able to keep them at temp with all the sitting we end up enduring at Thunderbolt (okay, I was responsible for one red flag on 11/1, but only one!). My wish would be to have a naked edge on DC III's. I guess the current pattern allows for better performance in the rain? Reading the comments about the Rosso leads me to want to try them. The tires should warm quickly and have the groove-free edge that I want.
One other thing. I AM GOING CRAZY WITHOUT TRACK DAYS IN WINTER! I CAN'T WAIT TO RIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:argh:
Happy Holidays everyone!

Thanks to everyone for the Pirelli write up...
Here's my next question...
My bike has Mich Pilot Power Slicks.. they have one track day on them... I have never ridden with slicks and i dont have tire warmers... I run in the I group... is it worth it for me to get the warmers ? or get the DCIII ?
TIA

with regard to rain... street tires get their wet grip from the compound, not the grooves. the grooves in the center of the tire are to move the water out when the bike is straight up and down and the fat part is in contact with the road. at lean in the wet the contact patch becomes narrow and the rubber compound's gripping ability takes over.

Tirewarmers are a great investment. You definetly want to use them with slicks. With any trackday or race tires the less heatcycles on them the better. So if you put them on in the morning and after each time you get off the track that's like one instead of seven. You will be able to ride alittle harder the first couple of laps because they are already heated up.There are many brands of the standard type for $300 or less.

True, or you can just run the DC3 on your current wheel. I've been doing it and keeping up just fine :D

didn't you also claim the 180 on a 160 rim was one of the reasons you crashed at Beave in September or August? whether that mattered or not, a 180 is pinched on a rim designed for a 160.

At risk of offending the sponsorship of Pirelli, and the masses here within, I must say I'm a big fan of the Michelin Powers. (I had a 2000 748 when I lived in Texas, and ran Michelin Rensports that were phenomenal tires, IMO) I ran Pirelli's on my '04 1000RR when I first tracked it. I felt the rear broke away more than it did slide with predictability. I also didn't get the front end feedback that I was looking for. I switched to the Pilot Powers and then the 2CTs. Currently, I'm running a Power Race front (med) and 2CT rear (similar setup to the Pirelli Pro front/DCIII rear) on the GIX-6 on the suggestion of a CR. I gotta say I'm a huge fan of this setup. Once I got my suspension dialed in, I've had no issues with uneven or odd tire wear, and I'm very happy with how they've performed. Also, the wet grip on the Michelin's are outstanding. I got 5 track days at the end of the season on this setup, and I could probably get a couple more days, though I'm going with fresh rubber to start the season.
(FWIW, I'm running mid to upper half of "I" group, and was running 1:40's - 1:41's at NJMP Thunderbolt)
I think the thing is though, both the Michelin's and Pirelli's are SO close in performance, you really can't go wrong either way. They're both great tires. Though, I don't know if I'd throw the Rosso's on. I'd stick with the more track-dedicated tire.

I've been curious about the Michelin race myself and just found a deal I can NOT afford to pass up. What pressure are you running with the race? You are using the dots right...not slicks?

The wear pattern you are describing is a product of improper suspension setup, not the tire.

Going off of memory....
At NJMP Thunderbolt in early Sept (very warm) I ran f/r 30/30. At Beave a week later, a bit cooler (high 70s) I started at 28/26. At a cold day at Beave in October, I started at 26/26 in the moring and probably ended up at 28/28. I monitored them throughout the day and I don't think I changed more than 2-3lbs at either end.
Correct, NOT slicks. Power race front, 2CT rear. I did not run warmers, and I dont think I would have benefitted from using them with this setup, though the warmers may have given an extra couple days on the front... but who knows.:dunno: I am thinking about going to slicks this season but not till May or June, but then I WILL get warmers. In the end, I will stick with the Mich's untill they give me reason not to.
