I have been an avid supporter of the Pirelli tires. I recently switched over to the Dunlop 209's and I have to say that I LOVE THEM!!!!! Usually when I have a weekend at NJMP I am through a set of Pirelli's before the weekend is done. Keep in mind that I CR and do every advance session. I already have two full weekends at NJMP and another day at Summit Main. I finally had to flip the rear and have 1 more day on the rear and at least 2 days left on the front. The tires are real grippy and predictable.
Moon thanks for convincing me to try the Dunlops!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While James uses the 209s, I set up the R6 for 211s; they've got fantastic dry grip and help up to NJMP Lightning (long right hander) better than the Pirellis I used earlier in the season.

Do you need warmers with the 209s? The only available rear is a 190? Still tempted...

Judy, I believe Dunlop 190 was designed to also work on the 5.5 rim. You should have no trouble should you decide to use it.
I am running the BT003 Bridgestones at the moment. They are also fantastic and like the Dunlops and last longer than the Pirelli. I plan to use the Dunlops later after my supply stack is exhausted. However you need warmers. This for most isnt the best solution and can be an added expense / worry that's not needed. My wife rides and I'm at fault for whatever tire fails her so with some deliberation I changed her over from the DC3 to the BT002 RS (soon to be Bt003 RS). No warmers needed and they are not going to cycle like a race tire. No idea if they can go 15 days like her DC3s. The BT002 RS has great grip and should suit you fine. Remember its not a race tire so it should have some differances. So if your looking for a solid preformer and a different tire Moon can get these also. Only thing right now is they aren't on the truck you need to order them.
I also recomend the Dunlops even at a higher price. Its been my observation you are recovering that additional expense with longer life.

Thanks, Troy, good info! Sounds like at my pace, I'd be better off staying with the DCIIIs or trying the B'stones 002RS or 003RS. No way I'm fast enough to justify the expense of tire warmers, generator, etc.

What kind of suspension changes are you guys making going from a Pir Super C or Diablo Super C (180's) to the Dunlops (190's)??? I need to get new tires on Monday and I am split on whether to stay with the Pir or try the new Dunlop 209's.
Not real interested in messing with it throughout the day.....

measure the height of the Pirellis on the rims and then the Dunlops on the rims and change your geometry accordingly
it really depends on your personal preference and current base setting if you will have to make any changes to rebound or compression

Remind me to smack you. :flipoff: Just ride them and then we'll adjust as needed. It really is that simple
I believe that the new 209 (AMA Daytona Sportbike spec tire) was designed to work specifically with a 5.5 rim. I haven't used them yet, but based on what I know of the older Dunlop tires I would guess that they are a stiffer carcass than the Pirelli's. This probably means a little softer suspension setting, and maybe a change in ride height to compensate assuming the tires are taller.

Well I made the switch.....made no adjustments......just went out and rode it.........bike felt good.....was really suprised to not feel any real "character" differences between the 180 and the 190....I thought for sure turn it would take a lot more input. Definitely a stiffer ride between them....but again felt solid and planted the whole time.

is the 211 better than 209gpa? I've heard the 209 is slow than older AMA non-spec Dunlops.

I've always been a fan of Dunlop DOT's. I never ran 209 Ntec's, but the 211's are Ntec's, and they are amazing. Super stable, great feedback, and incredible traction. They turn fast enough for me.

I did race with them once. Too much adjustment needed when coming from Pirelli. Also when your at the vendor and he does'nt have or won't give you the good tires sucks. That was years ago. Moon would'nt do that. plus you can pre-order. But i think i might try them,if anything it would give something to do;)

NOTE: We will have a complete tire conversion chart soon.
For example(example ONLY!!) : If you went from DSC to 209 AMA Spec tire you would need to move you fork up 2mm rear down 1mm to keep you smae settings.
We will have the chart for all brands of tires

Dave, if your going from a Pirelli to any of the dunlop fronts, you need to make a front end adjustment. The dunlops fronts are roughly 6mm taller in diameter, so a 3mm change is needed.
The dunlop rears are only 1mm taller, so no change there.
As for the suspension, start by decreasing compression damping by about 6 clicks front and back. The dunlops are a much harder carcass.

I ran them this weekend and i really liked them, they were very predictable and super sticky! I've been having lots of trouble with the pirellis wearing in a half a day. I ran them this whole weekend and it looks like i could get another 2-3 days out of them wich i've never done on a pirelli.

+1 on the 209s.
I've run them for 4 track days (CR-ing in B group + running about half of my A sessions) and the tires have worn well from edge to edge, no cold tear, etc. The tires were in such good condition, I ran the same set for the WERA school, A Superstock, and Senior Superbike this past weekend and the tires are STILL in great shape! No, I'm not a cheap bastard, the tires just wear that much better and they feel just as grippy as the SC pros. I made no suspension changes.
