91 Suzuki GSXR 750

Question for the Group!
I was given a 91' GSXR 750 from my brother in law; good condition, runs, needs new exahust, and air cleaner and tune up, oil change etc. I have ran past track days with my K6' gsxr 1000! It was a street bike, track bike it was becoming more of a pain then anything else. Long story short would the 91' make a good track bike? Is it worth putting race plastic on and getting it out there? I figure hey its free and cheap to get track ready and it would be much better to learn on and get better as a rider then on the liter bike. Not to mention I would cry if I crashed the k6 looking at the amount of money I put into it.

Many of us track day riders cannot afford a newer track machine so we ride what we have.

Me? I have a 1997VFR750.

Is it a wicked track machine? Hell no and I know that. But its all I have at the moment. And if I waited around until I had the money for an SV650 or a new R6 it would be a long time before I was on the track.

So while I am in B group and learning the VFR serves it purpose. I would warn to watch out how much you spend on an older bike. Especially if have the finacial ability to have a better track bike in the future.

I've spent a little on suspension upgrades, but I have not gone overboard. Besides, the VFR needed better springs, oil and the back shock needs re-worked anyway. So wether I was on the street or not the work needed done.

A gentlemen in mid-atlantic rides a 1990 GSXR in A group. His opinion on this subject would be vaulable and hopefullly he'll chime in.

To sum it all up, my opinion is if you are in B group (or any group) the main focus should should be working on skill and the judgement it takes to apply that skill. If you have a capable track bike, which the old 91 is if in decent shape, then upgrade the springs in the suspension, throw some frame sliders on it if you can find them and come out and have some fun.

I ride a 98 zx-6 and have had it on the track. If you get the exaust and other stuff done ride it a while and if you feel confident that it will hold up go for it. Dont put a lot of $$ into it to start especially if it has been sitting for a while. You dont want to throw good money after bad.

"physicistkev" on the BBS here rides a '90 GSXR, I think (the guy that Bubba mentions above)... He's probably the best to ask, but if money's an issue, and you've got a bike that's reliable and won't puke oil, by all means, bring it out and play...
